FLASH SPOILER Review: Episode 4×03 “Luck be a Lady”

The Flash (4×03) – “Luck
be a Lady”
Written by:         Sam Chalsen & Judalina Neira
Directed by:       Armen V.
Kevorkian
We open three
weeks in the past, on a day in the life of Rebecca Sharpe as recorded by The
Thinker… and hooboy does Becky have a life!
This black
jack dealer has to be the unluckiest person on earth, she seems to be having
the worst day of her life but I’m willing to bet that, as good old Peter from
Office Space claims:
She gets on
a bus with the unhappiest people I’ve ever seen including a familiar face, our
friend from last week: Kilg%re and there’s a flash of light…
Cut to “today,”
and the gang is playing laser tag… Poorly. (Always be aware of your
surroundings! If the CW-Verse had a real
Ra’s al Ghul, you would know this!)
Later, Joe’s bought some junk food for
everyone because Cecile upset with the plumbing in Joe’s house.  But Iris and Barry get some good news, the
place they wanted to have their wedding at just came open.
But before
they can celebrate with corn dogs there’s a breach alert at STAR Labs… It’s a
false alarm though, Wally’s decided to invite Jesse over for date night… (I bet
they’re going to watch the latest “Road to Power Struggle” show on New Japan World! (With original commentary, of course!)
Sorry Wally,
not is it the wrong members of the Earth-2 Wells family, he’s got a break up
video letter!  Not Tranquilo, Jesse.  Not Tranquilo at all.  Tetsuya Naito wouldn’t appreciate this:

It’s okay
Wally, plenty of other fish in the sea.
You’ll find someone to watch Naito matches with but first someone just
broke into a bank!
Turns out
our friend Becky has had a very dramatic turn around.  She’s got better make-up, a flattering dress
and most importantly all that bad luck she was having is now happening around
her instead.  So of course she’s turned
to crime, and Barry totally would’ve caught her if some guy hadn’t hauling
marbles in a barrel that broke open… Because that would happen all the time.
When the
gang regroups to figure out what happened, we see why Harry Wells has been
brought back.  Science babble sounds so
much better being delivered with his condescending tone than Cisco’s bubbly
demeanor.  Barry gets the laymen’s recap,
basically she’s got a bad luck field now.
Better call Spider-Man, he handles Black Cat all the time!
Not like
that! What would Mary Jane think?
That does
leave Joe with the big question, where are all these new metas coming
from?  Better whip up some tech to figure
this out.
In the
meantime, Cecile’s called a plumber.
Turns out the pipes will cost about fifteen grand… or they could move
out?  As we’ve learned Joe’s really good
with change.  Back at Barry and Iris’
place, Iris is trying on the wedding dress when Barry comes in and sees her in
the wedding dress.  Looks like the bad
luck is spreading, especially since Barry was coming home to tell Iris they
lost both venues for their wedding.
While things
are getting worse by the second for Team Flash, The Thinker is Becky as she’s
having dinner at a hibachi restaurant where she runs into her cheating
ex-boyfriend.  It doesn’t go well for him.  The Thinker’s assistant thinks they should
bring her in but he’s still in “Let’s see how my evil plan progresses”
mode.
That brings
us back to Cisco, Harry and Barry tracking Becky’s dark matter trail to its
source… They’re probably expecting some sort of ominous crater so when they
find a pretty average looking street corner Cisco is not happy.  But Barry recognizes the place, he’s starting
to remember the first few hours after he returned and this is where he came out
of the Speed Force.  Well that’s not
good.  It gets worse, a city bus goes by
and it dawns on Cisco how Becky was exposed to dark matter.
The
situation gets even worse when Cecile calls Joe and him and Barry head back to
the West Home and find their pipes are coming apart.  But Barry’s keeping his chin up, and good attitude
brings good luck: They’ve found Becky.
He heads
over to Jitters to talk to her but he fumbles to the approach and it looks an
awful lot like as Becky is taking control of her power and she’s starting to weaponize
them.
So, gang
thinks their jinxed and they have some compelling evidence.  Barry’s not buying it but I think Iris does
since she’s crashing funerals to get married to Barry now.  When the priest officiating their shotgun
wedding has an allergic reaction to the incense I’ve found myself starting to buy
it myself.
Back at the
lab, Cisco learns that the reason Harry’s on Earth One and it turns out Jesse
and her Team Flash grew so tired of Harry that they kicked him out of the
dimension… That’s messed up, Jesse.
Though Naito might like that one:
But things
have gotten even worse!  Becky’s at the
Casino and she’s on a hot streak and as a result Central City is doomed.  Cecile and Joe are locked in the house after
she slipped and hit her head, a plane flying over Central City has struck a
bird and is going down and best of all: The Particle Accelerator has randomly
come online so it can do what Eobard designed it to do. (That would be
explode.)
So when she
sits down at the $10,000,000 Jackpot slot machine you can bet the world is
doomed.  But Harry has an idea!  Give up and let the accelerator explode!  As plans go, it’s pretty final.
Plot twist,
when the accelerator let off a blast of energy it temporarily screwed up her
powers enough to save the day.  Lucky
break!
In the wrap
up; Cisco invites Harry to stay on Earth One for a while and he agrees, Cecile
and Joe further debate moving into a new place and she throws him a curve ball
by telling him she’s pregnant.  Best of
all, Harry’s found the bus Becky was on three weeks earlier with a satellite that
does heat mapping so they now know there twelve people on that bus and with
Kilg%re and Hazard taken care of that means they have ten metas to find.
So now is
the perfect time for Wally to bail out… Are you kidding me, Wally!?  You were going to be this season’s running
gag!  Son.  Of. A.
Bitch!  At least tell me you’re
going after Jesse!  He’s going Soul
searching
in Blue Valley?! Oh, screw you!  Do you know how much fun I was going to have
with the “Wally the Japanophile” meme?
Sumo! Sushi! Sakura! For God’s sake, I could’ve brought back Kumamon to
Watchtower!
This is
unacceptable the only way it could get worse if this was all part of the The
Thinker’s plan to bring back Barry and defeat him and he was watching them
using the Android Samurai’s severed head!
Oh, for God’s
sake…
Fun episode
this week, Hazard was a fun one-off but more importantly we have a hint at what
The Thinker is capable of doing to Barry.
I liked that the gang is already clearly pretty far behind him as that
should (hopefully) make his final defeat satisfying.  The relationship stuff is still pretty
standard stuff at this point, but it’s the CW that should really be
expected.  But they did a good job of
pointing to Barry’s lost memories and “gibberish” from the first episode this
season with the Joe and Cecile subplot.  “This
House is Bitchin’” is still in play. And being right always makes me happy.
I will
actually miss Keiynan Lonsdale on a week to week basis but I’m sure he’ll
return a least a couple times this season… Though I find the timing interesting
with Titans in production so I’ll be keeping an eye out on this.
Lastly,
there may be some delays (beyond my usual procrastination) as I’m traveling for
work again but rest assured, I’ll be back to annoy the crap out of
everybody.  You’ll see.
Three Things We
Learned This Week:
1)
The Thinker set up Barry’s return from the Speed
Force.
2)
Cecile is pregnant.
3)
Wally has left town, at least for a while.
4)
Harry is going to stay on Earth One.
5)
Barry’s memories of the first few hours after
his return are still there.
Three
Unanswered Questions:
1)      It
was a busy intersection so what makes Team Flash (or Thinker for that matter)
think only twelve people were affected?
2)      Is
Harry being forthcoming with the story of his expulsion from Earth-2’s Team
Flash or is there more to it?
3)      Can
they truly hope to contain some with powers like Becky’s and the chaos they
cause?
4)      Can
Naito Beat Okada at the Tokyo Dome this January?
