SUICIDE SQUAD News Bits: Jared Leto Evades Joker Question + Amanda Waller Casting Rumor
Suicide Squad is currently well into the casting phase, and one of the most exciting rumors so far suggests that recent Academy Award winner Jared Leto is circling the role of The Joker. This was a bit surprising, as Joker is usually not depicted as having connections to the Squad. However, with the movie expected to feature Harley Quinn – likely played by Margot Robbie – including the Clown Prince of Crime in some capacity makes sense. But what does Leto have to say about potentially playing the character?
Speaking with MTV, Leto was asked directly if he is playing The Joker. Unsurprisingly, he completely avoids the questions. “There’s a film called Fight Club, my friend. And you know, the first rule about Fight Club is that you don’t talk about Fight Club. Enough said.” So, essentially Leto is saying that he can’t talk about it, which is often a sign that there is something to the rumor. The Oscar winner goes on to discuss the success that he has had over the past year, and he admits that he is in no hurry to do another movie unless the role is truly special. “I’m not really in a hurry to jump into another film unless it’s absolutely something I can’t say no to.” Following in the footsteps of Heath Ledger, who posthumously won an Oscar for playing Joker in The Dark Knight, could certainly considered something special. In other Suicide Squad news, we have yet another casting rumor to add to the pile. The site MikeTheFilmGuy has apparently heard that Scandal and Django Unchained star Kerry Washington “might” be in talks to play Amanda Waller, the woman responsible for forming the Squad. This is the first rumor we’ve heard about who might play this character since the film was announced.
Admittedly, I personally am not familiar with this source, and this is the first I’ve heard of the site sharing casting scoops such as this. So, while this could possibly end up being true, there’s a good chance that it won’t. We’ll just have to take it with a pinch of salt until we receive confirmation from a more credible source.
Regardless, Washington has been suggested for the role of Waller by some fans, and her fanbase will surely be excited to see her included in a big comic book movie such as Suicide Squad. So, while this potential casting makes sense, we’ll just have to wait and see, especially since an official cast announcement from Warner Bros. can’t be far away. Suicide Squad is slated to hit theaters August 5th, 2016.
