Dwayne Johnson Talks SHAZAM, Casting Billy Batson and More

With wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne Johnson set to play Black Adam in Shazam, we are still waiting on casting news for the titular hero of the film. In a new interview with MTV, Johnson offered an update on the script of the DC Comics film, as well as the casting process for Billy Batson.

“The Rock” says that the script is still being worked on, and everything looks “fantastic” so far. He also reaffirms his enthusiasm about playing Black Adam, as well as the current lack of an actor for Shazam. “I can’t wait to share more casting news by the way. No, we haven’t picked a Shazam yet, and we have been working on the script. Half the scripts [have] already come in. Fantastic, very excited about it. And what I’m really excited about is — because, again, I’ve lived with this character, and this opportunity for almost 10 years now, so it’s like, in my DNA! I’m like a little kid, and it’s the opportunity to create his journey, but that journey has to start out properly.”

Johnson then rehashes past comments about Adam’s journey, saying that he must start out as a slave and then a villain before “eventually” becoming an antihero. As for how the duel roles of Shazam and Billy Batson should be approached, Johnson has a few ideas. “I’m not quite too sure yet what we will do. There’s a lot of opportunity, with technology, maybe do a cool face replacement like they did in Captain America. Maybe cast two separate actors, I’m not quite too sure.” It will be interesting to see whether they will cast two actors for Batson and Shazam or a single actor enhanced by groundbreaking technology.

Stay tuned for more news as we have it. Shazam is set to hit theaters April 5th, 2019.
