Warner Bros. Has Reportedly Cast the New Green Lantern; Is He John Stewart?
With six members of the big screen Justice League cast, the only role that has yet to be officially filled is that of Green Lantern. Following 2011’s critically and commercially panned film, a new version of the Emerald Knight is expected to make his debut in 2017’s Justice League Part One before headlining his own movie, which is set for a June 19th, 2020 release. Otherwise, no other details are known about this take on the iconic character. Will Hal Jordan return, or will a new character such as John Stewart don the ring this time around? Well, a new report suggests that Warner Bros. has cast an actor to play Green Lantern.
According to Latino-Review’s El Mayimbe, WB has found its new Green Lantern. However, he is unable to get the name of the actor playing the Lantern, and he is currently looking to do just that. As for whether this is Hal Jordan, John Stewart or another Lantern, Mayimbe assumes that it could be Stewart because Dwayne Johnson passed on the role. Stewart is one of The Rock’s favorite comic book characters, and while he was interested in filling the role, the actor admitted that the studio is going in a “different direction” with that character. Of course, Johnson is now set to play Black Adam in 2019’s Shazam.
Also, it is worth noting that Arrow‘s Marc Guggenheim recently revealed that Warner Bros. had plans to use John Stewart in a DC project. Unless he is appearing in a television outside of the CW-DC Universe, this likely indicates that Stewart will indeed be the Green Lantern of the DC Cinematic Universe. Stewart has become a fan-favorite ever since the Justice League animated series, and including him in the live action films will add even more diversity to the JLA lineup. So, it would make sense for WB to use Stewart.
Not to mention, Tyrese Gibson has been campaigning to play John Stewart. Could that have paid off? We’ll just have to wait and see. Stay tuned for more news as we have it.
