Gal Gadot Comments on Playing a “More Naive” WONDER WOMAN and Solo Movie’s Tone

After meeting Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (set in the present day), the character’s standalone film will flash back a century to Diana Prince’s adventures during World War I. In a new interview with Digital Spy, star Gal Gadot comments on playing a younger and less experienced Wonder Woman, as well as the movie’s tone.

Gadot reaffirms that Wonder Woman is very much an origin story for the heroine, and when we meet her in this movie, she’ll be very different from her present day self in Batman v Superman. “In Batman v Superman, you get a glimpse of who she is but not where she comes from. In Wonder Woman, this would be the first time we ever tell the coming-of-age story of how Diana becomes Wonder Woman.” Gadot adds that, while we know all about the origins of characters like Batman and Spider-Man, we don’t know about Wonder Woman’s. But that’s about to change.

As for the film’s tone, Gadot says, “It’s very interesting. It has moments of humour, but it’s pretty dark.” Another dark superhero movie? Gasp! In all seriousness though, this shouldn’t be too surprising. DC’s movies tend to be a bit darker than other modern superhero films. Plus, this one is set in World War I. AKA, not ground for a lighthearted movie.

Finally, Gadot elaborates on how Diana’s characterization in Wonder Woman differs from Batman v Superman. 100 years before the Dawn of Justice, we have a “more naive” Diana Prince. “She’s this young idealist. She’s pure. Very different to the experienced, super-confident, grown-up woman you’ve seen.”
