SUICIDE SQUAD Retains #1 Spot with $43.8 Million in Second Weekend

Despite negative reviews from critics, Suicide Squad opened with a record-breaking $133.7 million opening last weekend. Now, the DC film is in its second weekend of release, where it had to defend its #1 position from newcomers Sausage Party and Pete’s Dragon. How did Suicide Squad fare?

According to The Hollywood ReporterSuicide Squad held on to the top spot this weekend with an estimated $43.8 million gross in North America. The downside? That’s a 67% drop from its opening weekend. While it’s not as big a second-weekend drop as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (69%), it’s bigger than Man of Steel (65%). It’s also one of the biggest second-weekend declines for a major comic book movie.

Regardless, Suicide Squad is still doing pretty well at the box office. The film has now grossed $465.4 million worldwide; $222.9 million domestically and $242.5 million internationally. Warner Bros. reportedly spent $325 million to produce and market the movie, so to break even, its final gross has to be around $650 million worldwide. Can it make it? Time will tell.
