Shazam! is expected to be present at Warner Bros.’ San Diego Comic-Con panel next week, and to get fans ready, we have a first official still from the DC adaptation.
Entertainment Weekly has premiered the following image, which sees Zachary Levi’s Big Red Cheese grabbing soda with Freddy Freeman (Jack Dylan Grazer). The still offers a proper first look at Shazam in costume; we’ve seen the suit in a bunch of leaked set photos, but nothing official until now.
Shazam! director David F. Sandberg spoke with EW about the costume design, offering insight into how it pulls from various eras of the character’s history. For example, the hood is from the recent New 52 version, but the shorter cape is from the original Captain Marvel. “I wanted to keep the shorter cape as a throwback to the original because that’s something that sets him apart from Superman or Batman. It makes him feel a bit more Golden Age superhero, which is the vibe I’m going for.”
With SDCC around the corner, we should have more news to share soon. Stay tuned.
Shazam! is set to hit theaters on April 5th, 2019. The seventh installment in the DC Films Universe stars Asher Angel, Zachary Levi, Mark Strong, Grace Fulton, Jack Dylan Grazer, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, Faithe Herman, and Djimon Hounsou. David F. Sandberg directs from a script by Henry Gayden.
