While Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has received solid buzz from fans and critics with each season, the show has had a decline in ratings for some time now. The fact that ABC placed this season in the dreaded Friday night slot didn’t help any. Fans have wondered if the show would be renewed or not, especially with co-showrunner Jed Whedon saying that the season five finale could work as a series finale if need be.
Now, we have an answer. ABC has confirmed (via TV Line) that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been renewed for a sixth season. The catch? The season will only run for 13 episodes. All five seasons prior ran for 22 episodes apiece. It’s unknown if this is intended to be the final season, or if the door would be open for more later.
It’s also unclear if Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will return in the fall or stick to midseason. With ABC’s Upfronts presentation tomorrow, we should know then.
Stay tuned for more as we have it.
