It’s just another day for the Bloodshot news train, as the Valiant Entertainment film picks up steam on its way to a 2019 release. Vin Diesel stars as the title character, while Eiza González, Michael Sheen, Sam Heughan, Talulah Riley and Alex Hernandez have all joined in supporting roles. And after much anticipation, we finally have some news on our villain.
The Wrap reports that actor Toby Kebbell (Warcraft, Fantastic Four, Ben Hur) has joined the cast as “Axe.” Not much is known about this interpretation of the character, but “Ax” (also known as @x) has been a fixture of the Harbinger comics from the earliest days of Valiant. In the original Jim Shooter run of Harbinger, he was a villainous harbinger (a human with woken psionic powers) who sought Bloodshot’s nanites for his own. In the rebooted comic line, Ax is a powerless computer whiz who assists the Harbinger heroes in times of need.
The discrepancies between these versions of the character leave open the possibility that Axe may be more of a classic antagonist. Valiant titles generally treat their “villains” as the heroes of their own stories, and resurrections are out of the question if an antagonist dies. Death is always permanent at Valiant.
Just as it should be.
How the Eric Heisserer-written project tackles this character is exciting the think about, but we won’t have to wait too long! Bloodshot is set for release in 2019.
