SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE Sequel and Spinoff Are in Development
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is one of the winter’s most anticipated films, receiving rave reviews and tracking for a solid box office opening. Now, Sony is planning to expand the franchise with not one, but two more movies.
Avatar: The Last Airbender‘s Joaquim Dos Santos has been hired to direct a sequel to Into the Spider-Verse, with Wonder Woman 1984 scribe David Callaham working on the screenplay. Plot details are unknown, but it is expected to continue the story of Miles Morales.
At the same time, a female-centered spinoff is in the works from director Lauren Montgomery (Batman: Year One) and screenwriter Bek Smith (Zoo). The film is said to focus on three generations of spider-women. Spider-Gwen, who plays a role in Into the Spider-Verse, is expected to be featured here. Characters like Silk and Spider-Woman are other possibilities.
This marks the start of Sony’s third ongoing franchise based on its Marvel characters. Spider-Man: Homecoming launched a new film series for the MCU, while Venom defied all odds as a box office juggernaut, cementing Sony’s plans for its own Marvel universe. And now, assuming the film is as successful as anticipated, Into the Spider-Verse will kick off another.
Stay tuned for more news as we have it.
