VENOM Retains Box Office Crown in Second Weekend
Despite negative reviews from critics, Sony’s Venom has proven to be a box office force to be reckoned with. It earned the biggest October opening in history, and it has held up in the days since. Now, its second weekend estimates are in. Venom grossed an estimated $35.7 million this weekend, retaining the top spot. This is a 55% drop from its opening, which is on par with other modern comic book movies. This brings its domestic total to $142.8 million. First Look: Ruby Rose Suits Up as The CW’s Batwoman
This year’s Arrowverse crossover, titled “Elseworlds,” will introduce Batwoman to The CW’s DC lineup. Played by Ruby Rose, the character will first appear in the three-episode event, before headlining her own show. And now, with filming on “Elseworlds” beginning, we have a first look. Despite negative reception from critics, audiences seem to be more on board with Sony’s Venom. The film, which is intended to launch Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters (SUMC), has been tracking higher and higher for a big opening weekend. And now, the early estimates are in. Venom opened with $80.3 million this weekend. This easily sets a new record for an October opening, surpassing 2013’s Gravity ($55.7 million). It also comes ahead of Warner Bros.’ A Star Is Born, which too exceeded expectations with $42.9 million.
