Hops and Box Office Flops: ‘BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA’
It’s All in the Reflexes Big Trouble in Little China is a seminal 80s movie, and it may just be John Carpenter’s best work. Starring Kurt Russell—a frequent Carpenter collaborator—as the braggadocios Jack Burton, it takes a familiar formula (the action/comedy team up) and escorts it into a superbly crafted world of ancient Chinese mysticism and mayhem. It subverts audience expectations in other ways, as well. Burton—for all his witticisms—is not your stereotypical hero. He’s actually more a bumbling, albeit well-intentioned, buffoon. The true hero is his friend Wang Chi (Dennis Dun). Their natural chemistry, along with the film’s out of this world villains, creates something more than your average action movie. It’s truly…

Hops and Box Office Flops: ‘FIGHT CLUB – I am Jack’s Podcast’
Fight Club hasn’t aged well. And that’s putting it mildly. It wasn’t that David Fincher and company didn’t have something to say. Certainly, they did. It’s more that the message is muddled and often lost amidst the overpowering stardom of Brad Pitt. You cast a movie star, you get a virtuoso performance. That’s generally not an issue, but when the character is meant to represent the reprehensible, a conundrum ensues. Pitt’s Tyler Durden is a false prophet; we’re not supposed to think he’s cool; and his ramblings—though hovering around actual facts—are not meant to inspire. Most viewers are aware of this, but for some, that meaning was lost. Thus, the dangerous…

Review: ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL – Tons of Heart But Not Much Else
Alita: Battle Angel is about a young cyborg girl who lost her memory. The film is about her discovering who she is. With the help of her friends, she realizes that she is the key to saving the world. Rosa Salazar stars as the titular character. She’s able to play this warm and innocent girl, but in an instant turn into an unbeatable fighting machine. The entire cast does well with what they’re given. Christoph Waltz (Dr. Dyson), Jennifer Connelly (Chiren), Mahershala Ali (Vector) and deliver solid performances. However, I wish there were given better material to work with. Narrative-wise the film is a bit of a mess. It lacks…

First Trailer for ONCE UPON A DEADPOOL
I think we all got so confused that we forgot our chimichangas in the microwave only to find them two days later when 20th Century Fox announced that a PG-13 version of Deadpool 2 was going to be released this December. At first, some people (myself included) thought it was an out of season April Fool’s joke, but it turns out that it was real. However, if you still need proof, Fox has now released the teaser trailer for the PG-13 version, which is called Once Upon a Deadpool. The focus on the trailer is the interaction between Deadpool and the actor Fred Savage, playing himself. Check it out below.…

Review: DAREDEVIL (2003)
You can’t talk about Daredevil without having someone reviewing the movie (even if you wanted to talk about the TV show only). So, let’s get started… In a time before Affleck became the target of memes and asked if someone bleeds, we could all see him in 2003’s Daredevil, where he plays the blind lawyer Matt Murdock, who is out for revenge against the mighty Kingpin. The movie adaptation is quite fascinating. You have the leads doing the best with what they have. Besides that, you have the two actors playing the lead villains hamming it up to eleven (I’m seriously wondering if Colin Farell and Michael Clarke Duncan either…

Fox Delays DARK PHOENIX Again, Sets DEADPOOL 2 PG-13 Cut for This Christmas
Despite releasing the long-awaited teaser trailer (touting its Valentines Day 2019 date) less than two days ago, 20th Century Fox has once again delayed the next X-Men movie, Dark Phoenix. The film will now hit theaters on June 7th, 2019. This puts it right in the heart of the summer, which – based on the competition – may not be the wisest bet. But, Fox is hoping that the move will lead to the film being a bigger hit in China. No exact reason was given for the delay beyond that, but the movie has been undergoing reshoots, which are said to be extensive. So, this gives them extra time…
