Netflix Renews JESSICA JONES for Season 3
Marvel premiered the second season of its acclaimed series Jessica Jones last month on Netflix. The show is arguably the most acclaimed Marvel/Netflix series yet. So, it shouldn’t be surprising to hear that season three is a go. Netflix has announced (via THR) that Jessica Jones has been renewed for a third season. No word yet on a release date or when the season will begin production. Currently, Marvel has yet to confirm its Netflix slate for 2019 (which is expected to include new seasons of Iron Fist and The Punisher), so that’s a possibility. This move further cements Marvel’s desire to expand its existing shows on Netflix, even with…

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Outpacing Marvel’s Last 7 Movies COMBINED in Advance Ticket Sales
Avengers: Infinity War has already been expected to be a massive hit. Ticket presales have been through the roof, trailer views have been incredible, and the film is already tracking for a $200 million+ opening. Now, the movie is setting a new record on advance ticket sales. Fandango has announced (via BoxOffice Pro) that Infinity War is easily on track to become its highest preseller in the superhero genre, more than doubling Black Panther. It’s also the biggest April preseller. But most importantly, it is outpacing the advance ticket sales for Marvel’s last seven movies *combined*. When you consider how big Captain America: Civil War and Black Panther were in…

Review: THE AVENGERS (2012)
The Avengers (2012) Written by: Joss Whedon Story by: Joss Whedon and Zak Penn Directed by: Joss Whedon So if you’ve been reading my reviews, and since I’ve seen the site stats I know you haven’t, you’d know I tend to open these movie reviews with a question. Usually a question about the nature of sequels and make no mistake, Avengers is a sequel. But this time I’m skipping the question. I’m not a fan of Joss Whedon. I think he’s a one trick pony; if you want a story where evil old men menace an overly-sexualized underage girl and everyone sounds like what a middle-aged man thinks…

DOCTOR STRANGE Writer Teases Sequel’s Villain and Baron Mordo’s Role
Despite the success of Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange, we’ve had very little news on a potential sequel. Director Scott Derrickson is reportedly attached to return, while the Sorcerer Supreme is playing a key role in Avengers: Infinity War this year. Now, we have an idea of where the first film’s writer and director want to go. Appearing at a Doctor Strange screening in Austin, Texas (via MovieWeb), screenwriter C. Robert Cargill talks about his ideas for a sequel. He says that, if he and Derrickson make the sequel, they want to have Nightmare as the villain. In the comics, Nightmare is one of Doctor Strange’s biggest enemies, serving as the ruler of the…

BLACK PANTHER is King of the Box Office for Fifth Weekend in a Row
Black Panther has been out for over a month now, but the Marvel Studios blockbuster is still making an insane amount of money. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Black Panther retained the top spot yet again with an estimated $27 million. This beats competition from newcomers Tomb Raider ($23.5 million) and I Can Only Imagine ($17.1 million). Black Panther is the first comic book movie to stay at #1 for five weekends in a row, and it’s the first movie to ever do it since Avatar. Black Panther is now at $605.4 million in North America and $1.182 billion worldwide. It is expected to pass The Avengers as the highest-grossing superhero…

Four Marvel Comic Characters That Deserve Their Own Video Game
The video game industry has been hit and miss when it comes to adapting superheroes into video game form. Spider-Man, the X-Men, and Batman have all had great games, but for the most part most superhero games have been movie tie-ins which tend to be terrible. Unfortunately, the video game industry (with the exception of the Batman: Arkham series) has not taken advantage of the superhero movie craze that has swept through the world over the past several years. We here at Astonishing Marvels have some suggestions for Marvel characters that deserve to have their own video games. 1. Black Panther: Black Panther is a cultural phenomenon right now…

Retrospective Review: Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1
The cover art from Awesome Mix Vol. 1, takes inspiration from Peter Quill’s Walkman. Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 was released in 2014 and is one of the most unlikely successes in the history of movie soundtracks. This album includes songs that were featured in the Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) film or in the film’s trailers. Every song on this album was released in the 1960s and 1970s. The most recent song on this album was released in 1979. Most of the songs on this album were all popular on A.M. radio during this time period. The only two exceptions to this…

First Image from VENOM is Released
We know, it’s not much to look at. Sony has finally released a still photo for the Venom movie, courtesy of IGN. The movie will be directed by Ruben Fleischer and features Tom Hardy as the titular character. The photo shows Hardy looking at an open book. The photo is kind of bland and doesn’t reveal anything, but hopefully we’ll receive a full trailer soon. Fleischer has confirmed that the movie’s plot is inspired by the six issue miniseries Venom: Lethal Protector, which turned Venom from a villain into more of an anti-hero. The film will also star Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, and Jenny Slate. Filming for Venom is currently taking…
