Box Office Updates: Ant-Man and The Wasp Go to the Movies
The summer box office season is in its final stretch, but we have some more updates on two superhero movies. Marvel’s Ant-Man and The Wasp held onto 7th place in its fifth weekend of release in North America, grossing an estimated $6.2 million. This brings its domestic total to $195.5 million, so it should hit the $200 million mark soon. Overseas, the film had a boost from a $6.2 million opening in the UK. The movie is now at $426.3 million worldwide. After it opens in China and other markets, it should easily pass the first Ant-Man‘s lifetime gross. Now, let’s talk about DC’s current movie in theaters. Teen Titans GO! To…

BLACK PANTHER Finally Crossing $700 Million in Domestic Box Office
Marvel Studios’ Black Panther took the box office by storm earlier this year, breaking record after record after record. Now, six months after release, it’s finally hitting one more key milestone. Per Variety, Black Panther is reaching the $700 million mark at the domestic box office this weekend. The movie has been sitting around $699 million forever, inching closer and closer to $700 million. But an unexpected theater boost this week is pushing the film over. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3: James Gunn Unlikely to be Rehired by Disney/Marvel
Over the past couple weeks, social media has been buzzing around Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker James Gunn. After a bunch of offensive tweets resurfaced, Disney quickly fired Gunn from Guardians Vol. 3, a move that has spawned much debate. There are people who think Disney was right to fire Gunn, those who want him reinstated, and those who are in the middle. Even the cast of the Guardians franchise has been vocal about their desire to see Gunn return to the franchise. According to Variety, Disney currently has no plans to rehire Gunn, despite the cast’s open letter. The studio cited how Gunn’s past behavior was in direct conflict…

ANT-MAN AND THE WASP Passes First Film Domestically, Still Behind Overseas
Ant-Man and The Wasp has been out in the United States and other markets for close to a month now, and today, we have an update on where the Marvel sequel stands in comparison to the original. Per Box Office Mojo, the film has passed the first Ant-Man domestically, hitting $183.1 million this weekend, against the original’s $180.2 million. However, when it comes to overseas, Ant-Man and The Wasp is still trailing, grossing $211.1 million vs. the first’s $339.1 million. So, the sequel has only made $394.2 million worldwide at this point. Before anyone says this is bad, there’s a very good reason why Ant-Man and The Wasp hasn’t passed…

Rumor: Will Maria Hill Appear in SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME?
My spider sense is sensing something. It’s some news about Spider-Man: Far From Home. Unless Numan Acar trolled us all with Instagram hashtags, it looks like we have got some indirect confirmation of a few actors. Namely Jack Gyllenhaal (Mysterio), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), and Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill). This post is the first time we heard Maria Hill in the mix of names for this particular film. But considering she is Nick Fury’s closest ally, it might not be that surprising. Maria Hill has been a recurring character in the MCU. She most recently appeared in Avengers: Infinity War, where she was among the characters who were dusted in The…

SHAZAM! Will not Reference Captain Marvel Title
There has been some confusion as of late when it comes to the title of Captain Marvel. We have Mar-Vell, Marvel Comics’ original Captain Marvel, we have Billy Batson, DC’s Captain Marvel, and we have Carol Danvers, Marvel’s current Captain Marvel. With both Marvel and DC releasing films starring their respective Captain Marvel’s how will they keep this from getting more confusing? Luckily, Shazam! director David Sandberg will help clear up the confusion. While talking with EW, Sandberg said: Let’s just say we’re going to have a bit of fun with that in the movie, but he’s basically known as Shazam, which makes sense because of the confusion. During Geoff Johns’ New 52 run,…

Rumor: IRONHEART Movie in Development
If a tweet from The Black List is anything to go by, we might soon have another creation of Brian Michael Bendis’ on the big screen. The Black List got a hold on a script about Ironheart (or Riri Williams as her civilian name is). Her first appearance was Invincible Iron Man Volume 2 in May 2016, with later taking on the mantle from Tony Stark – like Miles Morales taking the Spider-Man persona from Peter Parker. With Robert Downey Jr. expected to retire from the Iron Man role after Avengers 4, perhaps Marvel Studios is already lining up a replacement? That Hashtag Show explains that for a screenwriter to put…

James Gunn Fired from GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3
Early this morning, old tweets from Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn resurfaced. The tweets were full of jokes about pedophilia, rape, and more. Naturally, this spawned much outrage on social media. Gunn responded with an apology explanation, saying that he has grown and doesn’t make jokes like that anymore. He then deleted his Twitter account. Regardless, the damage is done. Disney has announced that Gunn has been fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Chairman Alan Horn gave the following statement (via THR). “The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with…

ANT-MAN AND THE WASP Falls to #2 in its Second Weekend
Ant-Man and The Wasp is now in its second weekend, where it faces off against new competitors Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation and Dwayne Johnson’s Skyscraper. The Marvel Studios sequel still held its own, but it still had a larger-than-usual drop for a MCU movie. Per Box Office Mojo, Ant-Man and The Wasp grossed $29.1 million this weekend, putting it in second place behind Hotel Transylvania 3‘s $44.1 million. This gives the movie a 61.6% drop from its opening weekend. This puts it right behind Spider-Man: Homecoming (62.2%) as one of the largest second-weekend drops in the entire MCU. It’s not all bad news, however. Ant-Man and The Wasp reached $133.1…

BLACK WIDOW Movie Recruits Director Cate Shortland
For the past few months, Marvel Studios has been looking at directors for its long-awaited Black Widow movie, starring Scarlett Johansson. The studio has been adamant about having a female director for this particular film. Last we heard, Lore filmmaker Cate Shortland was the frontrunner to take the job. Now, it’s happening. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Shortland has signed on to direct Black Widow. The hire comes after over 70 directors were considered. Amma Asante (A United Kingdom) and Maggie Betts (Novitiate) were the finalists, while Melanie Laurent (Galveston) and Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry) came close too. But Scarlett Johansson was a big fan of Shortland, which clearly gave…
