ONCE UPON A DEADPOOL Heading to Blu-Ray and Digital This Month
In December, 20th Century Fox released a new version of Deadpool 2, titled Once Upon a Deadpool, in theaters for two weeks. The film is a PG-13 edition of the hit sequel, anchored by a framing story featuring Wade Wilson and Fred Savage. Fox donated $1 for every ticket sold to “Fudge Cancer.” The movie grossed about $7 million, adding to Deadpool 2‘s theatrical total. Now, the film is hitting home video. AQUAMAN Surfs Past $800 Million; $1 Billion Worldwide Imminent
DC Films’ Aquaman continues to overperform at the box office, and today, it has passed a key milestone that sets it on track for a new high in the franchise. Aquaman has now surpassed Wonder Woman as the second highest grossing DC film worldwide, with $822.9 million. This includes a massive $606 million from overseas. The only title that has made more is Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which grossed $873 million in 2016. However, at the rate it’s going, Aquaman will soon surpass that one. AVENGERS: ENDGAME Headlines Fandango’s Most Anticipated Movies of 2019
Fandango has released its annual survey, where moviegoers are surveyed on their most anticipated movies of 2019. And unsurprisingly, Marvel Studios is headlining it with its most anticipated blockbuster yet. Avengers: Endgame tops the Most Anticipated Movie category, followed by Marvel’s Captain Marvel in second place. Other names included are M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass, DC’s Joker, and Star Wars: Episode IX. Comic book movies have also dominated Fandango’s other categories. Sony has released the first trailer for Men in Black International, a spinoff from the original trilogy. In this movie, Agent M (Tessa Thompson) joins the MIB organization, being paired with Agent H (Chris Hemsworth). Geoff Johns’ New 52 run on Aquaman created a lot of iconic moments and stories for the character. Perhaps the biggest is “Throne of Atlantis,” pits Arthur Curry and the Justice League against his half-brother Orm, the new king of Atlantis. Orm believes that the surface world is a threat, and he launches a huge assault. The comic was adapted into the 2015 animated movie Justice League: Throne of Atlantis, and elements are featured in the Aquaman film. Box Office Updates: Aquaman and Deadpool Go Into the Spider-Verse
Two superhero movies took on the domestic box office this week, while another continues its reign overseas and in preview screenings. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse opened with $35.4 million this weekend – a solid start for the universally acclaimed animated movie. The film took in another $21 million overseas, bringing its worldwide debut to $56.4 million. Into the Spider-Verse was produced with a $90 million budget (not counting marketing), so it should easily turn a profit, especially with strong word-of-mouth and holiday legs.
