The Weeknd’s transformation into Daft Punk is a win for music
Warning: this article discusses depictions of violence and abuse. Reader discretion is advised. One of the most unique musicians working today is Abel Tesfaye, aka The Weeknd. His work is catchy, memorable, and above all, deeply visceral. He brings a veneer of class to lyrics of melancholy and heartbreak. He’s off-putting to some, and to others a lyrical genius, spitting fresh R&B with falsetto highs. The Weeknd began a stride in 2016 at the 58th Grammy Awards, winning awards for Best Urban Contemporary Album and Best R&B Performance, and wrapping the year with the release of his triple platinum album, Starboy. Starboy was a work that draws its strength from…

THE MANDALORIAN SPOILER Review: Episodes 1×03 and 1×04- “The Sin/Sanctuary”
The Mandalorian (1×03 and 1×04)- “The Sin/Sanctuary” Written by: Jon Favreau (1×03 and 1×04) Directed by: Deborah Chow (1×03) Bryce Dallas Howard (1×04) Oh! You came back! Let’s not waste time, then. Episode three picks up as Mando is coming out of hyperspace. He receives a message from Greef containing instructions to head directly to the Client with the Child (who’s spending his time being cute and stealing a knob off one of the control levers.) Mando heads to the Client and after some grief from his Stormtrooper bodyguards he makes the delivery and as promised he receives a whole lot more beskar steel. Just before he leaves he pauses…

Hops and Box Office Flops: ‘MACGRUBER – Pound Some…’
MacGruber, which is a riff on the old jack-of-all trades television character MacGyver, is one of the more perplexing Saturday Night Live adaptations. I don’t say that in a bad way. It’s more because it takes a truncated skit (generally 30 seconds) and turns it into an unabashed, hard R, gross out gag, lowbrow yuck fest. That conceit can be a lot when stretched over 90 minutes. If that sounds terrible, and some may certainly find it to be, we don’t blame you; but it’s actually a lot of fun. And, honestly, if you have seen the skit, its decision to pull no punches makes a lot of sense. At his core, MacGruber—the character—is…

THE MANDALORIAN SPOILER Review: Episodes 1×01 and 1×02- “The Mandalorian/The Child”
The Mandalorian (1×01 and 1×02)- “The Mandalorian/The Child” Written by: Jon Favreau (1×01 and 1×02) Directed by: Dave Filoni (1×01) Rick Famuyiwa (1×02) So anyway… I feel like it’s been an eternity since I’ve reviewed the Flaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa- Wait a minute! What’s going on here?! This isn’t The Flash! This isn’t even the CW! Where the hell am I? Let me check… This is… The Mandalorian… That would explain people keeping their faces covered instead of taking their masks off every thirty seconds. At the risk of invoking déjà vu, “So anyway” welcome to my Mandalorian reviews for WOBEnt. I know I’m a little late but in my defense, I only…

Hops and Box Office Flops: ‘BLUES BROTHERS 2000 – We’re on a Mission from Pod’
Blues Brothers 2000 should have never happened. Period. It’s an uninspired rehash of one of the great 80s comedies. There is nothing new here; thus, there was no reason for revisiting the titular brothers. Oh, and lest we forget that one of them—John Belushi—tragically passed away in 1982. Without his oversized and all-consuming personality, there is an undeniable void that’s never filled. The magic is gone. And no matter how many fake brothers you insert into the mix, it’s not going to matter—particularly when the actors are stripped of most of their charm and charisma. John Goodman has never been less magnetic than he is here as “Mighty” Mack McTeer. Did…

4 Crossovers That Nintendo Needs to Do
Crossovers are nothing new for Nintendo. Just look at one of the most successful franchises of all time, Super Smash Brothers. While they have done other crossovers, such as Fire Emblem crossing over with Dynasty Warriors or Pokémon crossing over with Tekken; there is still plenty of potential for crossovers for Nintendo to consider. Here are list of suggestions: Soul Calibur x Fire Emblem With the success of Pokken (Tekken, but with Pokémon characters), you would think the next obvious step would be for Bandai Namco and Nintendo to make a crossover with their fantasy-themed 3D fighting game, Soul Calibur. With the fighting styles Soul Calibur is known for, Fire…

THE FANBOY: “Affleck Reflects on His Time As Batman in The DCEU, The Snyderverse Never Had A Chance, Marvel’s Blueprint Inspires, and Superman Is Coming!”
For the first show of 2021, The Fanboy Podcast’s Mario-Francisco Robles opens the show with a look at recent comments made by Ben Affleck about his time as Batman in the DC Extended Universe. Affleck’s thoughts thoughts stir up a whole discussion for MFR on how Affleck’s run was marred by a studio that couldn’t decide what it wanted DC’s film franchise to be. This segues things into how Zack Snyder was given the keys to the DC kingdom, then tripped up the moment he tried to take his first step into it, and how that means there’ll always be an asterisk on the Snyderverse- because we never actually got…

Review : FATMAN
When Billy Wenan gets a lump of coal under the Christmas tree, he declares war against Santa and hires an assassin to bring an end to the winter mascot people know and love. When the trailer for Fatman arrived, it took the internet by surprise. Those that watched it believed it was an off-season April fool’s joke (myself included). Now, flash-forward a couple of months and here I am writing a review for it. As the trailer started to roll, I was flabbergasted by what I was watching. Though, instead of a gun-crazy action fest like you might have expected from the trailer, the film actually tells a struggling couple’s…

Spoiler Free Review: Pixar’s SOUL
When the aspiring musician Joe ends up in trouble, he finds himself becoming a mentor in something he least expected. When I started my viewing of Pixar Animation Studio’s latest movie, a feeling of nervousness started to creep up. Everyone and their grandmother hailed this movie as Pixar’s next cinematic masterpiece. And as the credits started to roll, the shoulder started to ease up. While I might not find the movie to be the animated answer to Citizen Kane, to call Pixar’s Soul deserving of a place in the hall of fame is an understatement. One of the factors that makes Soul such a phenomenal experience is that they dare…

“A Very Fanboy Christmas”
For today’s special Christmas Day episode of The Fanboy Podcast, host Mario-Francisco Robles opens the show with a special geeky way that he was able to celebrate this special holiday this year. (Hint: It involves Superman!) He then brings on his longtime friend, and former co-host from The Revengers Podcast, Brett Thomas Miro, for a long-form discussion on Wonder Woman 1984 (which arrived on HBO Max today!), what Patty Jenkins’ Star Wars: Rogue Squadron could be about, the future of Star Wars, and a whole lot more- aided by copious amounts of wine, since MFR needs extra bottles for the Holiday Coquito he’s making! Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays! Remember: Life is chaos. So be…
