BLACK LIGHTNING Showrunners Talk Villain, Possible Arrowverse Crossovers, Static and More
At ATX Television Festival (via International Business Times), Black Lightning showrunners Salim Akil and Mara Brock Akil offer plenty of details on The CW’s latest DC Comics series. They confirm the main villain, while also discussing the show’s LGBT+ representation, Static, and the chances of the series crossing over with the Arrowverse. While other superhero shows frequently deal with a “villain of the week,” Black Lightning will avoid that trope. Instead, we’ll be spending a lot of time with the show’s big bad, Tobias (presumably Tobias Whale from DC lore). Salim explains, “It’s a character driven show. I don’t know if there’s going to be a fight every week. There’s…

SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING on Track to Open in the $100 Million Range
The original Spider-Man franchise had consistently been one of the biggest players in the comic book movie genre, but the Amazing Spider-Man films’ grosses paled in comparison to Sam Raimi’s trilogy. In 2014, Amazing Spider-Man 2 became the lowest grossing installment to date, despite the huge $250m+ budget (not counting marketing). Fortunately, with Marvel Studios now involved, the franchise is about to make a comeback. According to Deadline, Spider-Man: Homecoming is on track to open anywhere between $90 million and $108 million next month. This is a solid start for the new reboot, which has a budget of somewhere over $100 million, on par with most Marvel Studios films and much less than…

Needless to say, Avengers: Infinity War (and its 2019 sequel) will feature a lot of previously established characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Everyone from the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy to Doctor Strange and Spider-Man will unite to save the world from Thanos. Recently, Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman joined the film’s set to shoot his scenes. Now, another character from that movie is joining. According to Deadline, actress Danai Gurira will appear in Infinity War. She plays Okoye, the head of the Dora Milaje, an all-female elite force in Wakanda who serve as T’Challa’s bodyguards. Fox Sets Director and Returning Cast for X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX; Jessica Chastain in Talks to Play Villain
After much speculation, 20th Century Fox confirmed last month that the next main X-Men movie will re-adapt the “Dark Phoenix” storyline. The story was previously adapted in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand, but it was crammed into a movie that was dealing with a mutant cure subplot and, frankly, didn’t do the original story justice. Since then, creatives involved with the franchise expressed interest in revisiting the storyline. Now, we have confirmation of a director and cast. After months of rumors, Deadline confirms that Simon Kinberg will direct X-Men: Dark Phoenix. This will serve as Kinberg’s directorial debut, but he has served as a screenwriter and producer on multiple X-Men…
