BIRDS OF PREY Casts Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary
We’ve heard a lot of casting stories for DC’s Birds of Prey movie, which will see Harley Quinn team up with a gang of female characters in the DC Universe. Many actresses have been tested for the ensemble, and now, two key characters have been cast. Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane) is set to play The Huntress, while Jurnee Smolett-Bell (Underground) has been cast as Black Canary. While the two characters have been portrayed in live action before, most notably on Arrow, this will serve as their debut in a movie. Welcome back to the latest round of TV News Bits. This installment is mostly DC-centric, but we have a good update for a hit Marvel Netflix series too. HBO’s Watchmen series has recruited Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross to compose the score. The two have worked together for a few years now, including their collaborations with director David Fincher. BIRDS OF PREY Movie Sets 2020 Release Date
Margot Robbie’s Birds of Prey movie has been the next DC title to head towards production. The film will see Harley Quinn team up with a slew of female characters from the DC Universe. And sure enough, the ensemble is next up on the slate, as Warner Bros. has confirmed its release date. The (currently untitled) movie is set to hit theaters on February 7th, 2020. Originally, WB set an untitled DC film for February 14th of that year. HBO Orders WATCHMEN to Series, Sets 2019 Premiere
After years in development, HBO’s Watchmen pilot finally went into production a few months ago. Now, we know when the pilot – and the rest of the season – will premiere. HBO has confirmed that Watchmen has been given a full series order. It will premiere sometime in 2019. No word on an episode count yet. In addition, the network released a plot logline from the series. Set in an alternate history where “superheroes” are treated as outlaws, Watchmen embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel while attempting to break new ground of its own. HARLEY QUINN/JOKER Directors Offer Script Update for “Deranged” Relationship Movie
Warner Bros. previously put several Harley Quinn-centric films into development. One of these was a film pairing her with Jared Leto’s Joker, to be written and directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa. We haven’t heard too much on this one in a while, especially with Birds of Prey being the studio’s top priority. But now, the filmmakers have provided an update. We have a couple of big DC TV casting updates. DC Universe has found the titular hero of its next original series, while this year’s Arrowverse crossover now has a villain. The Goldbergs actress Brec Bassinger is set to star as Courtney Whitmore in Stargirl, a new show on DC Universe. The series revolves around Whitmore, a high school sophomore who is adjusting to a new school in Blue Valley, Nebraska. Along the way, she discovers that her stepfather used to be a superhero’s sidekick, and with a cosmic staff, she will inspire a new generation of heroes. We got a first look at Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker Joaquin Phoenix in Warner Bros.’ Joker movie recently, and now, the studio has formally announced the start of production. The press release confirms the film’s stacked supporting cast, including Robert De Niro and Zazie Beetz. Additionally, Brett Cullen has signed on to replace Alec Baldwin as Thomas Wayne, while Bradley Cooper is producing alongside director Todd Phillips. Despite being a major financial success in 2016, Warner Bros. has taken its time with making a sequel to Suicide Squad. First Official Look at Joaquin Phoenix as the Future JOKER
Warner Bros. has begun production on its Joker movie, which stars Joaquin Phoenix as the future villain in a new origin story. While we wait for a press release announcing the start of filming, we have a first-look photo from the movie. Director Todd Phillips shared a first look at Phoenix’s character, named Arthur Fleck. Fleck is clearly lacking the Joker’s signature makeup and green hair, but that’s kind of the point. The movie will be a character study that examines Fleck’s descent into madness, and it is expected to be extremely different from past Jokers.
